Polestar 2, the Chinese EV of the Volvo Group that will compete with Tesla
Polestar 2, the second model of Volvo's electric brand, was unveiled yesterday afternoon by streaming direct. A 5-door crossover that Polestar has explicitly declared to place on the market in direct competition with Tesla's Model 3, with a range starting from a recommended price for Europe of 39,900 euros (59,900 euros for the launch edition planned for the first 12 months of production).
The car is based on Volvo Car Group’s adaptable Compact Modular Architecture platform and features two electric motors of 150 kW/204 hp and 330 Nm of torque for a total power of 408 hp and 660 Nm of torque. The 78 kWh battery capacity will enable a targeted range of 500 km (WLTP).
The 27-module battery pack of 12 cells (324 in total) is integrated into the floor and contributes to the rigidity of the chassis as well as improves the car’s noise, vibration and harshness levels. Compared to a traditional car of the same size, Polestar 2 has a superior torsional rigidity of 35% while noise and vibrations are reduced by 3.7 dB at 100 km/h.
Design-led features include Pixel LED headlights with 84 diodes arranged in three rows that allow to travel with the high beams always on because they can obscure up to 5 cars that precede or arrive in the opposite direction, proximity lighting, Polestar’s now-signature frameless side mirrors (that occupy 30% less space) and the unique illuminated Polestar logo which is reflected onto the car’s panoramic glass roof.
Polestar 2 is one of the first cars in the world to embed an infotainment system powered by Android. The backbone provides a solid and adaptable digital environment for apps and vehicle functions to coexist, and brings embedded Google services to a car for the first time – including Assistant, Maps with support for electric vehicles and Play Store. Natural voice control and a new 11-inch touch screen display integrated in plank with a vertical oriented disposition bring the new interface to life. That thanks to the artificial intelligence of Google becomes the artificial assistant of Polestar 2. The choice of Android does not preclude the connectivity for Apple smartphones. The software update will take place by ether.
Phone-as-Key technology enables more integrated ownership experience, as well as Polestar’s connected services such as pick-up and delivery by smartphone. Thanks to the Bluetooth technology, the car opens via the smartphone within 1.5 meters of the vehicle thanks to four antennas placed at the four corners of the body. Power button is integrated into the seat: once behind the wheel with the smartphone in pocket, the system goes into "Ready to go" mode.
Polestar 2 provides maximum security systems with up to 9 airbags. Standard vegan interiors help reduce weight compared to leather and are a greener choice.
Polestar 2 is available with 6 body colors. The standard dynamic chassis can be enhanced by the Performance Pack that improves driving dynamics with Öhlins dampers, Brembo brakes and unique 20-inch forged wheels.
In common with all Polestar cars, Polestar 2 will only be available for ordering online that are just opens. The guide purchase price for the launch version of Polestar 2 is 59,900 euros with subscription pricing to follow at a later date.
Production of Polestar 2 begins in early 2020 in China. Initial launch markets include China, United States, Canada, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and UK. Other markets are under consideration for future expansion.
